Vincenzo Coronelli was one of Italy's most illustrious cartographers and globe-makers, A member of the Franciscan order, Coronelli rose to be its General before being deposed following charges of irregularity. A great deal of his time must have been spent in cartographical research as he drew, engaved, and printed over 400 maps: he also founded the learned society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. WORLDMAP Novissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, auctore Nicolao Visscher. Copperplate. Amsterdam, Nicolaas Visscher c 1679. Original handcoloured engraved map. Ca 43 x 53 cm. Shirley 486: It is not certain when this further world map by Niclaas Visscher first appeared. It may well have been produced by Nicilaas Visscher II following the death of his father Nicolaas I in 1679 and his date has been suggested by Koeman. Geographically it is almost identical to the Visscher-Berchem map of 1658, the only difference being the reduced extent of Anian which now occupies ten degrees rather than twenty degrees in the smaller north polar projection at the centre top. The surrounding decoration is however quite different from Visscher's earlier map. In the corners are vivid scenes showing the various signs of the zodiac accompanied by cherubs and other heavenly figures. There is no signature of any engraver. Examples of the map occur in Visscher atlases which can be dated from around 1680, particularly the Atlas Minor. A later state with cum Privilegio Ordin: General: Belgii Foederati printed below the title appeared in Van Keulen's 1695 atlas. Small restorations. [Ordernr.: 23184 ]
